Construction Details:

Just like Hijikata, everything is fully lined, and the only things I didn't make myself were the pants, boots and gloves.

The white shirt is polyester; it buttons in the front, the collar is interfaced and slightly shorter than on Hijikata since it's not visible on official art. It has cute poofy sleeves because why not. They close with snaps at the cuff, the buttons are only there for decoration! The gloves are store bought, I just removed the extra details so they were plain black.

The black vest is also polyester, it closes at the front with snaps and there's princess seams down the front and back. It's pretty much the same pattern as Hijikata with a higher neckline as according to game art. The buttons are only decorative: you can't see it that well on pictures but they're little flowers! I made a new one completely in case I wanted to lend it to friends.

The scarf is made with the wrong side of satin and polyester for the lining. It's two big pleated rectangles that slide into each other with two snaps on the back to close it around the neck. One day I'll make a real traditional ascot tie but sometimes I like having things lay perfectly without having to readjust them throughout the day.

The coat is made out entirely of polyester. I wanted to get pretty lining fabric in a dark dusky blue color but I couldn't find anything that matched the belt fabric I already picked out. It's properly double-breasted but again the buttons are only decorative and closes with snaps. They have pretty little flower details on them to match with the ones on the vest. The collar has stiff interfacing and is ironed in place but I also tacked it down just to be sure. I stole the buckles from an old jacket I had to make the sleeve cuffs (which I'm super unhappy with...) I just wished I had made the bias tape myself in a color I liked and tested them on the mockup because they don't fit properly even after remaking them.

The belts are polyester as well with embroidery thread sandwiched between the lining. It's basically a big triangle with ties.

Personal Thoughts:

I remade parts of this costume to shoot in 2019, but I'm still unhappy with it. I think I should have used a bigger variety of fabric (the musical used a glittery suiting for the coat and it looks so nice) but the shape isn't that bad, so I think I'm just doomed to be unhappy with how I look as Saito... It's both a blessing and a curse that my favorite stage actor played him, I'll never be worthy!
