About this Costume
Construction Details:
Most of the costume was made by Janet, except for the hat, belt, steel balls, and the straps for the spurs, which I did. The hat was made from scratch out of leather hide, and sewn together with wax thread. Belt was made out of leather hide and the studs were applied individually. The buckle is craft foam sealed with resin and then painted and aged with metallic green paint. The steel ball 'slings' are made out of upholstery leather and close via industrial snaps. The steel balls themselves started out as plain wooden balls, the details were dremmeled in, sanded by hand, then primed and painted. Pants were made out of a two-way stretch twill fabric, a mock-up was made so the 'patches' could be adjusted accordingly and so the garment could be very fitted. All seams are serged. The cape was made out of a sueded fabric, custom patterned and fully lined and top-stitched. The RAH figure of Gyro was used to see how the harness system worked, there is an extra strap around the back that comes around to the front so it stays on via snaps. The top is made out of a heavy-duty stretch spandex, with the matte side using for the 'right' side and the shiny side used for the 'wrong' side. Grids were made out of strips of fabric individually sewn up and then hand-sewn together at the cross-sections. All of the gridwork was done before pinning to the actual top and then sewing up the side seams. The entire top is serged. The domes on the top were cast using Smooth-cast resin, dyed with green dye and then metallic finishing powder was set into the mold before pouring in the resin was used to get the right effect. All of the domes snap onto the cross-sections so they can be removed to wash the top. Boots were bought and painted metallic gray with Angelus paints. Gloves were made out of a stretch velvet and are fully lined/serged. The arm straps were made out of leftover 4-way stretch blank vinyl from D, and are completely finished, as well. The wig is a lace-front wig that started off very wavy and curly, with the hot water method it was straightened out a bit but still retains a bit of 'bounce' much like Gyro's hair. The facial hair patches were individually cut and applied with spirit gum. The contacts were purchased, nails are polished with green paint, and Ben Nye lip creme applied over blue lipstick for the lips. Goggles were made out of Model Magic that is coated in an epoxy resin and the straps are the same stretch twill used for the pants.
