About this Costume
Construction Details:
Kimono: This was made BEFORE I learned how to properly wear a Kimono, so I decided to make it in such a way that you would not need to know how to make a Ohashori (hip roll) or need to use Datejime or Koshihimo ties. It uses a system of snaps in order to stay in place. Now all this being said, there were SEVERAL challenges when making this garment. The fabric is completely lined and serged for a professional finish, and then dip-dyed to create the lovely ombre effect from blue to pink. The flowers were also dip-dyed and then appliqued onto the kimono using a zig-zag stitch.
n
nJacket: The absolute hardest part of this costume. Each and every square was sewn together to make the checkerboard pattern. The jacket is also lined.
n
nNagajuban: Not an actual nagajuban but instead is a small vest. I did this so that I wasn't wearing too many layers.
n
nObi: Once again...not an actual obi but more like a very wide belt that snaps in the back. There is no musubi (knot). This was done so that when worn as a complete costume, there wasn't a large bump in the back made by the musubi. As the kimono would not have an ohashori, I attached a "faux-ohashori" to the bottom of the obi.
n
nKanzashi: made with grosgrain ribbon!
Personal Thoughts:
I could never stop loving all of Shiemi's costumes! They are so gorgeous! I have seen many versions of this being sold on ebay, where the jacket checkerboard print is pre-printed on fabric. This always irked me, so I decided to make my own.

This is the same wig I used for my other Shiemi costume! It was lightly trimmed in the front and then the ohago were made with hairspray!
