About this Costume
Construction Details:
I chose a non-magenta color for the kimono, using a heavy-weight cotton. The juban is a light weight cotton. Because I wasn't up to sewing hakama at the time, I bought a white pair and customized the ties to look more like the art.(I've since made a gray pair I can use with Kenshin and Battousai).

For the tabi I sewed covers over a well-used pair of tabi from iajutsu class, using the same fabric as the kimono. And for the zori I hand-sewed white covers over the straps.

The first sakabatou sword I made was done using a cardboard method, and I wasn't happy with it. So I made a second one, hand-sawn out of 1/4" pine. I built a handle around the wooden blade, using wide super long laces over painted corkboard (to simulate the sharkskin used in many katana).
Personal Thoughts:
This was the first cosplay I made. The fun part is I still wear it. Aside from the fact it was an easy costume to start with, I had been training in iajutsu, so the character had extra appeal as a good choice for my initial foray into cosplaying.
