About this Costume
Construction Details:
Suit:
I tailored the suit to fit me as well as it would fit a female body. I used a male suit pattern and altered it heavily to fit my frame. I used a medium weight black suiting fabric. The suit jacket is lined and has to flap pockets in the front. There is one button closure in the front, the same as the Penguins from the show. The front facings I decided to go with the satin look rather than some of his other lapel designs. The pants are made of the same suiting fabric and have 2 pockets in the sides. The pants are very comfy! The vest is made of a deep red jacquard, and is lined with an adjustable strap in the back. I also used the same fabric for the pocket square. The white button blouse I had already, so that saved me time with that part of the costume.

Tie and wig:
The tie is a continental style tie. I made it using the same satin as the lapels. I used a red jewel button for the closure, the same as the Penguin’s from the show. The wig I used Five Wit’s Cocky Commander General Snap wig and styled it into the appropriate way he has his hair. I spiked the back up slightly. I also added removable wefts of hair to the front to extend the front fringe down. I decided to go with the longer bangs that he has later in the first season. I prefer that look overall.

Nose and Makeup:
First of all, all the makeup applied was done by my wonderful sister, Sarah. She is a professional makeup artist and I could not have done this without her expertise. I sculpted the nose and applied it to my face. I used modeling wax, which can be tricky to use. I smoothed it out with moisturizer cream and shaped it as close as possible to his nose shape. I added a bump in the upper part and dropped the lower nose down more into the hook style nose.In terms of makeup, my face was paled down, contoured with darker shades to make my cheek bones appear very high with hollow cheeks. Darker makeup was applied under my eyes for his under eye shadows, as well as above my eyelids. Some darker makeup was used as freckles, by sprinkling it on with flick splatter for a natural look.

Overall I am really happy with the result of this costume. I was very nervous to try this seeing I don’t bare much of a resemblance to Robin Lord Taylor, but the makeup does a pretty good and convincing job! I am really happy with this costume! It was quit an adventure getting the makeup done and I really hope I get the opportunity to wear this to a con eventually!
Personal Thoughts:
First off I have to say that I have never once liked the character the Penguin from Batman (and I am a looong time batman fan.) That is until I saw the TV show Gotham and absolutely fell in love with the Penguin (Thank you Robin Lord Taylor for making the Penguin absolutely adorable and charismatic!) For the first time we get to see his origins and how he climbed his way to the top of the mob boss ranks in Gotham city. I was so enamored with the character I really felt the need to make a costume and try my very best to do this character justice! I went into some new techniques involving makeup and prosthetic application to achieve the correct look for the character. I will explain that in the makeup portion of this costume description.
