About this Costume
Construction Details:
I started by making the shoulder armor first. This was fairly easy since I bought regular sized 9” balloons and used them for a paper mache base. I used mod podge and newspaper on one shoulder, and flour and water for the other shoulder. Just for the record, flour + water > mod podge. :P There’s a time and place for that technique, and this was definitely not it.

After the mache dried, I cut out a design that would work on my shoulders and covered the mache in paper clay. I took about 3/4 of a pound for each one. Once THAT dried, I sanded it down with varying grains of sandpaper to smooth out the bumps and lumps in the clay. Adding water and putting small bits of clay helped fill different cracks. Once that was smooth and set, I covered it in mod podge and painted it accordingly! I mostly did the same with the helmet, except I cut it in a different shape.

The ears were made from craft foam that I just slightly bent around and cut to resemble ears. In hindsight I would totally cover it in paper clay and sculpt them to be more sturdy, but craft foam covered in mod podge does the tricky pretty well. The pink parts of my suit had the edges sewn by a machine and then I sewed them onto the suit by hand.

The body suit was bought on Amazon for about $35, and the visor was about $15 or so. The sword was an interesting project. I bought a hand and a half toy sword from Amazon, and covered the hilt in paper clay to craft the right shape. The gem was cast in resin with pink coloring, and placed into the clay hilt. I painted the sword pink and kept the handle white, and voila! There you have it!
Personal Thoughts:
This was a great and challenging costume to make! I’m a huge fan of Natasha Allegri’s work, and Bee and Puppycat really resonates with me. So when I saw the pilot episode for the show, I was CONVINCED that I had to make something. Most of the outfits are iconic and super adorable, but I loved the battlesuit she had. The whole transformation scene was so magical and Sailor Moon-esque!
