About this Costume
Construction Details:
My overall goal was to use materials I already had, and not to spend more than $100 on new things. I was mostly successful!

The skirt is built over a purchased hoopskirt. I wanted to go wider, but realized I'd have issues getting through doors if I did. Over the hoop there is a gray tulle petticoat with a wide, stiff ribbon at the hem. It's the type found in craft stores to make big wreaths, and it has little skulls on it.

Over that is an underskirt made with a queen-sized sheet, and trimmed in 36 yards of ruffles. The gray ruffles are made from dyed muslin (because cheap, lol!) The ruffles were gathered by hand, but I immediately bought a new ruffle foot after this because Never. Again.

The next layer is a sheer gauze material over a skull-print sheer fabric that was left over from my Misa Amane costume. The edge is hemmed with a scallop stitch, which wasn't too cooperative with the stretchy gauze but worked out. The buttons on that are vintage from my big button jar.

The white and black layers are cotton sateen, purchased during the Black Friday clearance sales (always stock up kids!) The purple ribbon came from my stash.

The lace is from Joann's, I used the nice edges to make the bits hanging out under the skirt, and made a little capelet from the rest. I couldn't figure out a way to do the exposed ribs, so for now the turtleneck works.

The jacket is more stash cottons, trims and buttons. The gloves were store-bought, and the shackles are made from construction foam so they're super light.

The wig was bought used, then horribly mutilated with craft foam, glue and hairspray! The flowers are craft foam that I heat formed, painted and then wired / glued together. They just kinda stick into a stretchy piece of black fabric for the hood, which I can sort of see out of.
Personal Thoughts:
Madoka feels! While watching the movie I knew I had to make this and started breaking down the outfit while still in the theater. Making this costume was a kind of catharsis for me, it's hard to explain. I was able to take a lot of negative things and work them out while sewing this, and I didn't succumb to despair.
