Construction Details:

Oh gosh, where do I start? Despite the simple-looking design, this outfit is deceptively complicated! First off are the two tops. To get them to fit on top of one another, I adapted the same pattern twice. The black undershirt is made of cotton-polyester. I added in a raised business collar and a sailor collar to get that weird collar/flap and trim them with a white horsebraid trim. The white jacket was even harder. I first made a mock-up and then got buunbuun to draw out the triangular edge while I was wearing it before I made it using gabardine. The collar is all one piece, and the rest of the jacket is fully lined. It didn't turn out exactly as I planned it, but it was ok.

The skirt is actually two separate skirts. Both of them are the same width, but the inner skirt is just a basic tube skirt with an elastic waistband and a gathered trim, and the outer skirt is a gray pleated skirt with a zipper and fitted waistband.

The leggings are plain black leggings that I bought, and to get the purple diamond pattern on the sides, I had buunbuun paint them on using fabric paint while I wore them.

I made the Soul Gem out of resin, put a Craft Foam backing on it, and attach to my hand with Spirit Gum. For the headband, I hot-glued stretch fabric over a base headband and added a lovely beaded trim to the top.

The shield was made by buunbuun.

Personal Thoughts:

I have a love/hate relationship with this costume. On the one hand, I really love Homura as a character. She's so tough and yet so vulnerable. But on the other hand, I hate how hot this outfit can be! When I wore it at Anime Matsuri, it wasn't too bad because of the hotel's A/C, but while doing this photoshoot, the layers and the long wig made it unbearably hot! If I wear this again, I'll only wear it in cooler climates.
