About this Costume
Construction Details:
The inner white kimono, I already had from prior outfits. I had to make the purple kimono from scratch though...and having not made a kimono in a long time, it came out a little smaller than was comfortable. Still workable though or that was 3 yards of fabric down the drain...I don't know the fabric, unfortunately but it has a nice texture and I managed to avoid Poly-Poplin~

The kimono body ends at about thigh length and the sleeves about the knees. The maple leaves were painted on with Tulip's Grape fabric paint. I vectored the shape from the concept art, printed them out in 3 sizes and traced them onto freezer paper. The freezer paper saved me a lot of time in laying down the general shape.

For the lower portion, I chose to do a no-split hakama using materials I already had around. I sewed down each of the pleats at the edge of their fold to help keep the shape. I'm considering remaking it so the pleats are deeper...

The apron is made of a poly peach skin satin. I sewed a tube that was roughly larger than my frame and gathered it slightly down to fit the top strap, adding a zipper and snaps in the back. Added in the shoulder straps and all the ruffles. Some tricks to manage the outfit are here: http://yunaura.tumblr.com/post/48903338552/

Giant hair bow also made of some left over dark purple poly peach skin satin and attached to a french barrette.

The boots were originally all black, and I painted it with white fabric paint. I need to go back and touch it up a bit before sealing it but the fabric paint stays on shoes pretty well in general. It's flexible as well.
Personal Thoughts:
It can get rather warm, but overall kind of fun to wear. I just need to stop putting heavy things to hold in my sleeves...
