Construction Details:

The fishhammer is made of craft foam, cheesecloth, white glues, paperclay, bamboo skewers, chiffon, acrylic paint, a plastic crosstitch grid, a 6' wooden pole, velcro, muslin, a toilet paper tube, and lots of hot glue.

The base is a cone made of craft foam covered in layers of cheesecloth and white glue. This was then covered in paperclay to form the "shell." The fin in the back is bamboo skewers and chiffon, with the bamboo ribs covered in paperclay. This entire portion broke off at SacAnime S11, so it was reinforced with more skewers that were wrapped in muslin and glue, and then covered in paperclay. It is pretty sturdy now, so I don't think I'll have that problem again!

The business end of the hammer is a disc of craft foam with the plastic grid on the back for stability. This is attached with velcro so I can open up the front and fix anything that has gone wrong with the pole, which is velcroed and hot glued in place, so I can remove the shell portion from the pole if needed.

The toilet paper tube is on the inside to keep the pole steady, if anyone was curious. ;)


I went with a black and gold colour scheme wherever possible for this costume. All the pearls on the cape are hand painted with black and gold paint and sewn on by hand, though I think I may add more that are even blacker and even golder in the future. The main fabric is cotton sateen that I dyed to a light gold, and the underside of the cape and skirt is the backside of dark brown and red baroque satin. The skirt is kept stiff with tulle and horizontal hoops of plastic boning.

I changed the skirt after Fanimecon 11, so if it isn't as stiff and isn't topstitched in photos from that con, that is why.

I chose black/gold as the main colour scheme (with red/brown for the skirt) because I wanted to make the costume look elegant. The gold is used on her sprite, and the red and brown is arguably used on her official artwork. (I certainly wasn't going to use purple and green like on her sprite!) Sadly, there really isn't much official artwork, and on the artwork there is, the colours and construction are rather ambigious. I guess this lets me take a few creative liberties, though, which I enjoyed!

I'm not sure if I will ever make the spiked armwarmers or the legwarmers, though I do plan on making the wrapped fabric on the hammer, I just need to get on sewing some wire into a strip of fabric.
