About this Costume
Construction Details:
I designed all the outfits and accessories (and built most of what you see) with the exception of Twilight Sparkle. However, all the girls were really supportive and there to offer opinions on progress and such, as well as posting their own progress on the items they took care of. So even though I brought together a chunk of the costume work, it really was a big collaborative effort, and I think that made a huge difference :)
So small notes...

Rainbow Dash: Was probably my favorite to work on, but she was the last one I put together because I was really indecisive about her design for quite a while. There's so many directions to take with this outfit, but I really wanted a cute, sporty, playful Dash. In the end, I decided on a roller derby twist to her. It was important to me to not go crazy with too much rainbow, because I felt the design would get too busy to be aesthetic. Also, she totally got to borrow my brand new Chucks, which I had to hold off wearing for most of the summer so I wouldn't get them dirty. Burloire was so perfect for her!

Pinkie Pie: I don't think many people caught the joke in Pinkie Pie's outfit, but the letterman font is the same used in the Victoria Secret's PINK line. It made us giggle. I stitched each letter individually, and each letter has three layers of fabric, so there's where the bulk of my work went. The wig was a little last minute, but this was Pixie's first time cosplaying, and the Lady Gaga-esque look seemed appropriate the sorority style hipster Pinkie Pie has going on, although we are working on some different ideas for next time. She also had a Gummy and the Ep.5 joke mask which was always good for a hoot.

Applejack: Oh, dats me. My orange plaid shirt was originally a 2x, and after major surgery it turned into a medium with puffed sleeves and a lace-up back. Though almost none of the detail can be seen in this photo, the straw hat was distressed for a weathered look, then trimmed with leather, suede, and apple studs around the crown. I threaded leather cording around the brim. My favorite element is the leather cutie mark saddlebags. Who needs a purse for cellphone and wallet?? Not this one.

Fluttershy: This was the first outfit I worked on and it came together like MAGIC. I really wanted to stay away from the dowdy look with her...I know she's shy, but modesty and dumpiness need not go hand-in-hand. I had so much fun making that belt, but the wings were the best part. I built Fluttershy's wings and Dash's together, they're both lightweight and glitterbombed. Sarah styled her own wig and found those fabulous shoes.

Twilight Sparkle: PosiTori made everything herself, and went through great lengths to get that wig right! I don't know her exact order of assembly, but the wig was a constant thorn for her, and it seemed like it was the first thing she started and the last thing she finished. So worth the effort, she looks amazing. We sort of bounced ideas back and forth about outfits/colors, but from the beginning she wanted a school uniform look, which I thought was 100% appropriate for Twilight.

Rarity: VAVOOM GIRL, WHERE U GOIN' WIT ALL DAT? So you know, the design choice is obvious if you've seen MLP:FiM at all. The main concern with this design was that I live on the west coast, while kalasnacks is on the east, and I knew I wouldn't be able to fit the dress like a proper ball gown prior to the convention. For that reason, I chose to make the torso of the dress out of a knit so she could walk into it without much fuss. The entire ruffle train skirt and drape are a non-stretchy material. Girl is so GLAMOUROUS.
Personal Thoughts:
Our My Little Pony : Friendship is Magic group from Dragoncon 2011. Some of the best ladies I've ever had the pleasure of cosplaying with! They are all beautiful and charming and magical!

Ears/horns purchased from Yaya.
Wings made by me

This apple orchard used in the Big Mac/Applejack/Applebloom pics is one of about 50 of a community known as Apple Hill. Totally legit. It's quiet now, since the trees are only just starting to bloom, but come autumn this place is a mad house with all the apple harvesting. And CIDER. I think we'll come back in the fall for Super Cider Squeezy 6000 shenanigans. For now, enjoy all the apple blossoms that gave Applebloom her namesake!
