About this Costume
Construction Details:
Wakfu is my new obsession. It's an awesome French cartoon with a similar feel to Avatar: The Last Airbender. I quickly fell in love with it, and with Yugo as well! I wanted a nice, easy project after making Wander, and he was perfect for it. I found a beautiful linen fabric at Joanns for his pants and hat. I used my same trusty base pattern for shorts that I always use. I edited it so the two seams are in the front and on the inside of my legs, and also added the little vent at the bottom. I also was lucky enough to use leftover fabric from both Ciel's great coat and Toph's apron. I used the coat fabric (which is a suiting fabric) for the two pockets on the back, and the apron fabric (which is a twill) for the "belt" and the rectangle details. The orange/gold fabric is also a twill and took a LONG time to find. The belt and apron snap into place so I can easily take the pants on and off. The belt has diagonal seams, but it's difficult to see. It's stuffed with polyfill. The apron is fully lined. The shirt was really easy to make. The difficult part is the binding - it's an open back shirt! I used an ace bandage with hooks and eyes to bind, that way I could just lower it in the back. Anyway, the shirt is actually an apron pattern modified. It's fully lined. The big button is made from Sculpey. The rope inside of it is twill and also has the diagonal seams and stuffed with polyfill. It's sewn onto the shirt. The neck of the shirt snaps in the back so I can get that nice, tight neckline. The hat was, needless to say, the most difficult part. I started with a simple beanie pattern. Much, much patterning later, I came up with what is seen here. It has a buckram base around my head, which I sewed wig clips into to get it to stay onto the wig. The detail at the bottom (I don't even know what to call it?) is cream faux fur, though it looks white when there's flash. It's REALLY hard to find a nice pile cream fur, and if I ever find a better one I'll probably replace it as mine has a subtle sheen to it that I don't like. There's also a band of the darker teal suiting fabric above the fur - more reused fabric from Ciel. A lot of handsewing was necessary for this hat. It's stuffed with polyfill AND air packets - a brilliant idea from someone who I don't even know, not even their name. Thank you, whoever you are. It took a lot of weight out of it. The shoes were bright pink Crocs originally. I filled the holes with leather, built the extra tongue with leather, and built up the sole with upholstery foam and leather. The squares on the front are also upholstery foam and leather. Then the shoes were painted. The rope detail on the shoes is the same rope stuff seen in much more of the costume. The wig is from Epic Cosplay. I don't remember the name or the color. I should really start writing this down. It was easy to style, but I didn't realize when I bought it it had a slight curl to it, which was a pain.
