About this Costume
Construction Details:
I loved Macross Frontier when I first watched it back in 2008. I knew right away that Sheryl was my favorite character and that I wanted to cosplay her ending dress. Lion! I wanted to go for a more ethereal look imitating the embellishments that Japanese cosplayers add to their costumes so I chose shiny fabrics, two tone taffeta, lace, more roses, and shiny beads to use on the costume. I first made the skirt of 3 layers, one of purple satin, one of blue white taffeta, then purple organza for a fairy look. Let me tell you, making 3 circle skirts, hemming them, and making them into a skirt with a waistband was no easy feat. It's SO tight, but makes me keep my good posture. lol. The bow was made of layering the purple organza over a rectangle of blue taffeta, and the tails are just straight up organza. The organza was a pain to hem, so I had to just straight up zigzag the sides and trim the remnants off really closely with scissors. The stockings are from welovecolors.com, and were too bright, so I dyed them darker with acrylic inks. The red garters are real red garters from electricboutique with purple lace sewn on the tops. The shoes are from eBay, and are so cute! The gloves are from electricboutique too. Red roses from Claire's/Icing, and sewn or glued onto satin ribbons. The corset was terrifying to make since I had limited purple/blue taffeta. I had no trust in my patterning skills, and I found about over 10 websites with directions on how to draft corsets. In the end I winged it, and made the corset out of one piece that I hemmed appropriately to fit my body. There is real plastic boning in the red strips that were sewn on. The corset closes in the back with a red zipper I had to shorten. The white ribbon had to be handsewn on, then beads were sewn on as well. The gold clips had to be bought on eBay then handsewn to the red ribbon. I am wearing two petticoats, but I need a third to get the big fluffiness that Sheryl has since the skirts are so heavy. The big bow on the bottom needs to be put on a different way because the top of the corset was getting in the way and making it droop. I am wearing two wigs, one from Ayanamisatoru on Taobao and a second pink one from eBay for cheap. Sheryl has a massive amount of hair, so I thought it was right to wear two wigs for her. :) The contacts are the Dollyeye Blue.
Personal Thoughts:
one day I might remake the whole thing to be less frilly and more accurate with the colors and lighter fabrics, but I'm satisfied for now how I did this costume. It was one of my dream costumes and I did it! I think I'll wait a little while before I even consider redoing it. The next time I wear it I'm definitely going to be more energized and fresh.
