Construction Details:

I've wanted to do this outfit of Toph's all along, but I decided to do her Fire Nation disguise first. But now I'm doing this one! I chose a green linen for her main outfit. Linen isn't one of my favorite fabrics because of its appearance, but its color was the closest I could get while also using a fabric that is appropriate for her clothes and isn't a quilting or stretch/knit fabric. I was able to use my old pattern for her pants, which I'm still very happy with. They have horsehair braiding in the hem to keep them nice and flared out at the bottom. They're also very comfy! Unfortunately I couldn't have pockets in these pants since they'd show. Her shirt was also relatively simple. I modified a Simplicity pattern. It ended up being robe-like, as it is open in the front, ties shut, and has a button inside to keep it closed. It was the only way I could get the neckline accurate, since I wouldn't be able to fit it over my head otherwise. The apron wasn't too difficult to draft. I used a twill (which is oddly soft for a twill) that I found online. It was very difficult to find a fabric that, when you looked at it, you asked yourself 'is that yellow or cream?' which is what I do when I look at Toph's apron. I think the fabric I found fits it pretty well. I actually modified the same pattern used for the shirt. The apron is lined and closes with snaps. Her belt, bracelets, and anklets are all made out of leather, and were the first things I've ever made with leather. I really enjoy working with it! The bracelets and anklets were wet-formed to get the bump at the top. The fabric parts were sewn onto the leather itself and close with snaps. The belt has dirty golden rounds in it. Everything was painted with Angelus leather paints, and has eyelets in them so they can be tied shut like a corset. The headband was made out of two layers of Wonderflex, sealed with a combination of gesso and spray primer. It's painted with acrylics. I used pom poms for her puff ball things. It attaches onto the wig with velcro, so I can just switch my headbands for when I wear her Fire Nation disguise.
