About this Costume
Construction Details:
The dress is a 2 way stretch evening gown satin with the mid-section being a heavy white bridal satin & 2 different kinds of lace. Stockings & gloves were purchased (I swear at this point I own every kind of stocking style imaginable) & shoes were re-used from my Franziska Von Karma costume since they were the same style & color. The hardest part of the dress was figuring out which of the several variations of the magnet dress I wanted to do. I went with the overall most common design. The headphones were a learning experience as I've never worked with EL wire before, but I'm very happy with how well they turned out (I had wiring help from a friend who's very good with electronics, so now I know how to wire & light things). The headphones are a black headband with a white ribbon with black trim on it. I sewed matching black lace from my dress onto the ribbon & applied the entire thing to the headband. The headphone ear pieces are made of out paper mache box tops & tin candle tops both painted black & then I etched the designs into the tin (because I'm crazy like that) & sealed the entire thing. Applied a light gauge wire to it & wrapped that wire with pink plastic lanyard. Wrapped the EL wire around that & attached a tiny driver & a battery case inside each headphone along with a little switch to turn them on & off. The mouthpiece is part of a prop "diva headset" & the inside of the headphones are lined with foam from an actual headphone. The butterfly wings are craft foam, sealant & teal gels.
Personal Thoughts:
I'm starting to notice that I have a habit of doing costumes of girls with pink hair. I'm going to blame that on dying my hair pink for the past 7-8 years. I've always loved the Magnet designs even if they're some of the most popular designs besides their regular ones. They're my favorite color scheme (pink & teal & black & white) & I love the song & it's theme. I decided to make this costume for Otakon because I got asked to be a performance judge for the masquerade 2 weeks out from the convention, & I needed an easy & comfortable costume to sew in that amount of time. I'm so happy that Arlette agreed to be my Miku <3 I knew I needed someone shorter than me (& I'm 5'3" so that's a bit hard to find) & who was cute & she was the first person I thought of who would be perfect (& we got to take "almost-making-out-but-not-quite" photos & be in character... ahem).
