About this Costume
Construction Details:
Do you hear the Chopin from here? I do, and it is not happy. Oh, Austria. From the moment I caught a glimpse of his absolutely beautiful wardrobe, I was in love. Once I found out that he was a classical musician, just like myself, I was even more smitten. So many reasons for me to love this character, but the classical music pretty much sealed the deal. I made this coat in a grand total of four nights, starting at 9 PM and working until 2 PM with a few distractions from the internet here and there. It is a fully lined coat, made of cotton twill bottomweight and military braid. I chose the buttons used because of the eagle motif, in order to echo the Austrian eagle found on some versions of the Austrian flag. I've had a lot of questions about the ahoge on the wig, and really, I got the advice from my friend Rose! All it is is twisted craft wire wrapped in matching wig fiber and covered with clear caulk or Modge Podge, then left to dry. After it is dry, I stitched it onto the base wig and it can bend into any shape you could possibly want an ahoge to be in, including a heart! The riding crop is a nod to both the Spanish Riding School, a famous equestrian school founded during the days of the Hapsburg Family's rule over both the Holy Roman Empire and the Spanish Empire. You can still go see the school and performances in Vienna to this day. Also, Austria is seen wielding one in the comics. The conductor's baton is, of course, a nod to his musical prowess and virtuosity, since I couldn't fit a whole grand piano into a photograph, or even have easy access to one.
