Construction Details:

This outfit was actually worn by one of D’s ancestors in volume 9 but it was one of my favorite designs when I first read through the manga.

The costume took a lot of sewing due to all the layers and came together slowly over 3 months. I planned out the different pieces so that all the closures would be hidden when worn together. (for example, the tabard buttons at one shoulder under the brocade collar)

Everything is lined or French seamed. I made my own bias out of gold taffeta and tacked the back side into place by hand to avoid visible stitching on the outside. The collar is trimmed with applique and interfaced with needlepoint canvas to give it shape.

The brooches were made with painted stone cabochons and filigree pieces. And since I had a few D costumes by this point, I finally splurged on theatrical contacts so I could do his mismatched yellow and purple eyes.

Personal Thoughts:

This is definitely my favorite of my Count D costumes and my favorite costume overall. ^_^ I love the photos taken by my brother and Lionel. And it was wonderful to have a great Petshop group at Anime Boston 2008, including my friend novaraven who made the same outfit in different colors and wore yellow contacts to be D’s grandfather. (D and his grandfather look alike other than the eyes.) Her friend was Leon, Doorknocker Dog was Ten-Chan, and Lilly was the Bird of Paradise.
