About this Costume
Construction Details:
The orange stretch vinyl is a 2-way stretch fabric from the LA Fashion District in 2010 (even back then I didn???t have the time or I felt as though I didn???t have enough skills to properly execute the project, so 7 years later, here we are). I followed a simple princess seam pattern for the top and drafted my own pattern for the collar (the cone of shame, LOL). I made my own piping for the white trim at the edge from couch piping/stuffing and encased it in white poplin that was cut on the bias. The ???5??? logo was made from craft foam that I traced, cut out, and glued using E6000 to the top. The edges of the top were folded inwards at the armhole and the bottom to finish them.
nThe skirt is a half-circle skirt that I patterned using some geometry. The skirt doesn???t have a visible waistband in the reference so I added interfacing at the top edge and faced it with the same orange vinyl fabric to finish the top edge. The bottom edge of the skirt has the same white piping trim as the collar. I also added boning to the bottom edge of the skirt to help maintain the lampshade shape. For the gloves I used the ???turkey hand??? method by tracing my own hand and created a pattern from that. The underside of the gloves I used red spandex since the orange vinyl itself doesn???t have much of a stretch.
nFor the boot covers I used the ???sandwich muslin??? method by pinning the boot in between two pieces of muslin on either side, traced where the seams would go, and added seam allowance. For the oxygen tanks / jet packs I made the cylindrical structures using halves of a styrofoam ball, craft foam, and Worbla. I sealed and primed it with modge podge, filler putty, and gesso before spray-painting them with a dark blue metallic paint used for model-kits. They attach with purse magnets at my back to a harness underneath my top that I wear like a backpack with elastic straps that go around my shoulders.
nThe ray gun was purchased on Amazon and the wig is from Arda Wigs.
Personal Thoughts:
This is one of my dream costumes I???ve always wanted to make ever since I started cosplaying back in 2003. I absolutely love the fun, futuristic, and retro space theme. I had waited 14 years later to make it as I built my skill sets over the years as well as had better access to more suitable materials and wig options. Overall I???m very happy with how this costume came out and I???ve worn it to multiple cons: Game On Expo 2017, Crunchyroll Expo 2017, and Portland Retro Gaming Expo 2017.
