About this Costume
Construction Details:
I???d been meaning to make a new Victorian costume for a long time. I really love bustle styles. A friend invited me to the Grand Holiday Ball and I really didn???t have anything to wear but had a lot of stash fabrics and insanity, so I suddenly made a new gown! It helped that I already had a lot of the patterns, supplies and underthings. I was inspired a lot by the costumes in Crimson Peak.
nI used my new Victorian corset made at Costume College this past August and Truly Victorian patterns: 1884 French Vest Bodice, Petticoat with bustle, Four Gore Underskirt and Autumn Overskirt.
nThis dress is almost entirely silk and natural fibers. In particular there is silk that I brought back from my trip to Beijing in this dress, which made it a lot more special to me. I wanted a lot of tone on tone details in the dress (even though they don???t show up well in photos???) so I alternated panels of regular silk taffeta with different patterns of Chinese silk. I added red velvet vintage flowers and leaves all over the hat and the middle of the bodice. There are beaded appliqu??s and trim and fringe trim as well as ribbon embellishment. My friend Judy helped me to form the straw tall hat a long time ago and I???m just now getting to be able to wear it.
