About this Costume
Construction Details:
This costume was mostly an exercise in alteration; the base dress is a severely altered A-line sheath knee-length dress which was sewn to a steel-boned corset at the neckline to give the top a form-fitting shape. The sheer white blouse, as well as the boots, tights, wig, gloves, and black bikini bottoms were bought from various thrift stores and online. The cape was made using the same pattern as Triplicate Girl's, using a dark green cotton fabric I found at JoAnn's. I added another foot to the length as the Empress' cape is longer than Triplicate Girl's, and a stand-up caller backed with two layers of interfacing to the neck seam. The belt is black craft foam with worbla scraps painted silver for the gem casings. The "emeralds" were molded from craft store plastic gems and then cast them in resin, as dark green pre-made gems are almost impossible to find in any reasonable quantity. The tiara is made from worbla and another cast gem and ties in the back with thin black bias tape. Finally, the Eye of Ekron is a plastic bouncy ball from the toy section of Target, spray-painted white and the details painted with acrylics.
Personal Thoughts:
My favorite classic comic is the Adventure Comics series, The Legion of Super Heroes, and I especially enjoy the story of The Emerald Empress from the fearsome group of villains, The Fatal Five. The source of her power is the ever-present floating Emerald Eye of Ekron, and it becomes unclear as the narrative progresses if she is controlling the Eye or if the Eye is controlling HER. Ultimately, this is revealed upon the Eye's destruction and her subsequent death, though there have been other Empresses and other Eyes in later reincarnations. I also really love her design and green is my favorite color, so making this was a no-brainer.
