Construction Details:

I portrayed Ryuko for Aniplex's events at Otakon 2014.

The cosplay is patterned and completely made by me (minus the scissor blade. Many thanks to my boyfriend for that).

The construction was pretty much a school girl uniform with minor differences such as Senketsu's eye and the suspenders and whatever those hip things are. I made sure to have similar fabric throughout the whole cosplay so I made my own suspenders and belt to hold the hip things. I also created my own bias tape to make sure the red fabric was the same throughout (minus the gloves).

I patterned and completely covered a sneaker to get as close to Ryuko's actual shoe. I created a new midsole as well and painted it to match. The sneakers also cover the original eyelets so that the laces are barely visible. The tongue and the back of the shoe have extra foam inside to make them larger.

The glove was tricky. I sculpted the wrist shape and all of the little pieces. They were then molded and made into plastic. They were then painted. The "bangle" stayed on my wrist by magnets and velcro. On one side, magnets lined up and the other had velcro attached to the glove as well as the bangle. The glove itself was made to form fit my hand so there's a zipper that goes up the side.

The scissor blade's construction was my boyfriend's. I did however sand and paint it. I used a grey primer and Dupli-Color Metal Specks in Retro Red.

The wig was Arda Wig's Inigo in Dark Blue. I sewed in extra wefts to make sure I had hair to work with. I also dyed everything with RIT black dye to tint it slightly darker. I wanted the hair to appear dark but also be blue in bright light. It also needed to be on the reddish blue, not green blue. I ended up being very picky with the color.

The red hair was stiffened felt with red hair attached to it so the hair never fell flat and always curved outwards.

Senketsu's "eye patch" is a worbla base shaped over an older bra. I then sculpted the scar so that it recessed into the base. I then painted it and covered the rest in the same black pleather used throughout.

Being Ryuko is a ton of fun and I want to take this cosplay out for another spin soon!

Personal Thoughts:

This was my cosplay work to be Ryuko Matoi at Otakon. I got to represent the character for the Aniplex booth! Hanging out with the English cast of the show was fun!
