About this Costume
Construction Details:
Made this 100% from scratch. The basic idea is a kimono with sleeves that look like wings. The underlayer kimono is red lining fabric, while the outer kimono is mostly white satin.

I spent quite a while figuring out how to make the wing-sleeves; each of the feathers are reinforced with craft foam on the inside, and sewing them took me forever. I made slots in the wings so I can have my hands out for eating and grabbing stuff. The Obi is fabric wrapped around craft foam, held in shape with needle and thread and has velcro closure.

Makeup is inspired by the head of the crane and geisha makeup as well; I blocked out my eyebrows with glue stick and wore false lashes with feathers in them. And yes, that is my real hair. :)
Personal Thoughts:
This costume is partially inspired by the Japanese legend of the Crane Wife. I spent 2 weeks making this Halloween costume and it snowed on the day I wore it. Even though it made it hard to walk, I think the snow gives this costume a very good backdrop; too bad no one was around to take pics of me in it. =__=
