About this Costume
Construction Details:
WHEEE UH okay. The costume was purchased half at Joann's and half in the NY fabric district. The body of the dress is made of blue silk dupioni, the most expensive by-the-yard fabric I've ever purchased, with the white accents being reverse-side of bridal satin. The dress body is lined (the sleeves are not) for seamlessness at the neckline and around the bottom hem. The gold trim (8 yards of it!!) is from Daytona Trimmings and attached with glue everywhere, don't hate me, there was so goddamn much of it. The hat is made of the same dupioni/reverse-silk and super-stiff interfacing, and was my first time making something of that nature. I made the leggings out of the floppy rayon knit from Joann's. The armor is craft foam, mod-podged and puff-painted for the 3D accents, then spray-painted and distressed. The sash is grosgrain ribbon, taped and painted with acrylic.
Personal Thoughts:
Trinity Blood was the first anime I found/watched on my own terms back in 2007, and I went through such a fangirl phase, oh my gosh. I absolutely loved the Funimation dub of the show, the clothes, the characters, the post-apocalyptic setting, and in particular the Catholic/supernatural undertones! It took forever to get up the nerve to cosplay from it, but aside from Esther, I always intrinsically knew I wanted to cosplay Astha the most. I love her soul-partner type bond with Abel as his tovaras, her sympathetic attitude to Terrans, the fact she kicks absolute ass, and....mostly getting to be Abel's best friend, okay. I very nearly copped out and did the anime version, but I love the light novel/manga designs so much that I basically decided I'd do my best, and if I stopped short, I'd be somewhere between the two designs anyway.
