Construction Details:

The most challenging part of this costume was figuring out how to handle the ruffles on the skirt, because the design for this dress is one of those magical anime designs that doesn’t translate in real life. After a lot of prototyping, I finally decided to stuff the ruffles with tulle and tack them down the front of the skirt in her signature zigzag pattern. There are a lot of little extras on this dress that are hard to see in photos; I hand cut all of the scalloped ruffles myself, and each one is subtly beaded so that they make a repeating penguin face design. All of the trims, the bias tape, and the buttons are handmade and hand covered. I am particularly proud of the arm ruffs, which required startching and a special design to keep them from being too bulky. I am also proud of the beak on the hat, which I moulded and cast out of latex for comfort and flexibility.
