About this Costume
Construction Details:
I followed a simplicity men's Jacket pattern, which ended up having to be altered quite a bit since I'm so small. The jacket itself was made from white paisley patterned cotton fabric (the pattern is very faint but I prefer to use a slight pattern since it gives the costume more depth and a sense of realism.)and a black dotted cotton fabric. The jacket is also accented with red ribbon trim. The buttons are sewn on just for looks; I opted to use a zipper for closure rather than buttons because I wanted it to fit tighter. The epaulettes were made from scratch. I cut a base from cardboard, ,made a little pillow with stuffing and fabric, and covered it with red fabric. It is accented with gold and and white cord. I used a combination of sewing and gluing to create them. Her brooch was constructed from DAS clay that was air dried, sanded, primed, and painted. The center jewel is a jade green button. The red cord attached to the brooch and to the epaulette is actually 3 smaller red cords braided together. It was attached to a pin and used to help close the collar. Her rose was also attached to the same type of pin. The shorts are a modified part of under armor shorts. I just added black dance spandex panels to the side; they are hand sewn on. This costume taught me a lot. It was a much more complex pattern than I thought it was going to be XD but it provided a wonderful base for the jacket and was great practice for altering larger patterns to fit a smaller frame. I am so proud of this costume; it greatly exceeded my expectations.
