About this Costume
Construction Details:
I do want to mention the wig, as it's the part I'm most proud of. It started out as a medium-length white wig. I dyed it using the FW Ink method, back-parted it with extensions from CosWorx that I also dyed, and then curled it with curlers, a blow-dryer, and a massive amount of got2B Freeze Spray. Unfortunately, due to the caulk used to secure the extensions, the mesh doesn't stretch anymore, so the wig likes to slip back every now and then. However, when I remake this costume for ACEN '11, I'll be redoing the wig along with mostly everything else. And a quick note. At the time I started working on this costume, the only good references (i.e. multiple angles) I had were in-game screencaps. Vanille's beading changes drastically between the game and the CG art; in-game, they look like pony beads, but in the CG art, they look like precious stone beads. I went with the pony beads for purposes of both time and money, but I'll be replacing them with stones when I remake the majority of this costume~! (For the record, I used pearlescent pony beads; I thought they matched her color scheme a lot better than the generic ones you can buy at craft stores.) Pretty much all I'm keeping are the necklaces, the tan belt, the boots, and the accessory pouch. Everything else will be scrapped and remade for an accurate CG version!
Personal Thoughts:
Let me start off by saying that Vanille's outfit is extremely deceiving. At first glance, you think, "Oh, hey, she's hardly wearing clothing, it won't be difficult or expensive at all!" So you add her to your costume list for ACEN alongside Summoner Yuna thinking it won't be a big deal. Six months, $300, and several ulcers later, you find out just how wrong you were. I'm kidding, of course, I don't mean to make it sound so awful~! I had a lot of fun working on this costume - Vanille's my absolute favorite of the FFXIII cast, and I seriously had so much fun cosplaying as her at ACEN! Even if I went as far as doing her strange Australian/British/Amurrican accent throughout our photoshoot (much to the dismay of the rest of my group).
