Construction Details:

A group of my friends put together a D.Gray-Man group for AFO 2007 (to reprise at Dragon*Con). I hadn't originally planned on participating in it but had a flash of inspiration about dressing as the Earl. I made most of the pieces from scratch: coat, shirt, waistcoat, cravat, and hat. I modified a pair of pants I already owned as I just couldn't bring myself to wear the giant balloon pants. I already owned boots, even if they're not pointy-toed, and I bought several pairs of gloves off eBay (to allow for soiling as the day wears on).

I originally made the costume in 2007 but decided to make a new hat for 2008. I used a hatband design I found in the 6th volume (U.S. edition) on a splash page just before the 55th Night. Since it's in the manga, not the anime, I had more leeway in what colors to use, but I chose to stick with classic black & ivory (less stark than white in photos) combo. The costume already has enough colors! I entered this in the Hall Costume Contest at Otakon 2008 and took Best of Friday.
