I grew up wanting to cosplay not because I felt it was necessary to be in costume to attend a convention. In fact, for the first 4 years that I've cosplayed, I didn't even know that costume contests existed, and so I never entered any. I've been sewing for 10 years now, and I love cosplay because I love clothes and making them. Not only do I make costumes, but I also create all of my own clothes, from my prom dress to even underwear. The things that inspire me to create a costume are more my love for an outfit and less any desire to fulfill some obligation for a convention or pretend to be another person for a short time.
This means that when I sew a costume, I don't believe that the end justifies the means. I want to create a piece of clothing that is what the character is actually wearing because of my love of clothes. This means I end up with clothing that has durability and can be worn for other occasions rather than just a flimsy costume.
I think the characters in anime and manga have some of the most interesting and beautiful clothing I have ever seen, and I think it would be a treat to integrate that style of dress into our everyday life.
