About this Costume
- Construction Details:
- First, for the simple stuff, the turtleneck shirt was bought from Goodwill and then altered. The skirt is made from a pattern, Butterick 5285, out of a dark blue cotton. The boots were also from Goodwill, but I added a cuff on top with some semi-matching faux leather. The opera length gloves are a nice matte spandex and were bought from River's Edge Dancewear. The "leather" belt was made using faux leather and a buckle from a recycled belt.
Now for the tougher part, the armor is all made out of craft foam with thin plastic super glued to the back for stability. I drafted out each armor piece with tag board to get it to the shape I needed and then used those tag board pieces as templates for the foam. Most everything is glued together with superglue, but I used foam glue on some of the detail pieces.
After it was all assembled, I spray painted it with a metallic silver and then used a mix of water and black acrylic paint to "weather" the armor some. For he detail pieces, like the cross, I used a dark, dark gray acrylic paint. Unfortunately, the spray paint likes to rub off, so I'm going to have to fix up some spots and get a top coat on there.
Almost all of the attachments (front piece to back piece, etc.) were made using velcro that's super glued to the inside of the armor. The "metal" belt piece uses magnets instead.
- Personal Thoughts:
- This was the first time I'd made any extensive armor, and it was quite the learning experience. This was also before the prevalence of Worbla, so I feel a bit cheated with my foam armor attempt (lol).
Erza is my favorite character from Fairy Tail, and I hope to do more of her outifts/armors later if I can survive this experience.
