About this Costume
Construction Details:
The great thing about Moulin Rouge costumes is the fact that a lot of information about the construction and fabrics used in the original costumes is readily available if one knows where to look. For my recreation of this costume I used information gathered from these sources and then ran with it. The dress is made from an ivory silk crepe -- I lucked out and found 12 yards for $55. The bodice is steel boned and laces with grommets up the back. The border is taken from an Indian glitter sari which ultimately turned out to be a bit of a disaster. I deemed this sari to be the 'Forever 21 of saris' due to the fact that it was made of some cheap synthetic, smelled like turpentine, and vomited glitter all over kurzeshaar's sewing room as well as my hardwood floors. Pink, light green & clear swarovski hot fix crystals were applied to the bodice. The headdress was made from several pair of over-sized earrings which I broke apart and soldered together. They are accented with swarovski crystals and wired onto a rhinestone headband. The Hindi bridal necklace set was ordered from an importer. Wig is lace front. Also, rumour has it Pixiekitty's cat Kimmie made this which might be the cutest mental image ever.
Personal Thoughts:
Satine was the first costume I wanted to recreate. However, like a lot of my dream costumes, I kept putting it off in favour of other random whims. Now nearly a decade later I finally decided to make this costume. I'm not certain why I ultimately settled on the Hindi Wedding dress other than the fact that I don't believe I've ever seen it done and I absolutely love the headdress -- also, I'm a masochist and have to keep working with ivory silk crepe despite loathing the stuff. In retrospect, I should have gone with the Gothic Tower dress as everything that could go wrong with this costume did. It was a labour of love.
