About this Prop
Construction Details:
You would think this would be the EASIEST thing in the world to make, wouldn't you? Oh, just grab one of dem dere funkins, and start carvin, right? yeah... no. Version 1 (large pumpkin)--I bought a funkin. I lovingly carved the face, sanded it, and painted it by hand (the inside using a long paintbrush). I made the stem to be the correct shape and length as the figure's from Model Magic sealed with acrylics and polyurethane, which I also used as the final clearcoat. Version 2 (small round pumpkin) My boyfriend lovingly pointed out that my pumpkin was too BIG. I bought another funkin. Repeat process. But I still wasn't happy. The shape just wasn't right. I knew I'd never find a pre-made one in that shape, so... Version 3 (squished pumpkin)--I MADE a pumpkin. I took a handful of plastic shopping bags, balled them into a footballish shape. Wrapped that up in saran wrap. Rolled out model magic, and pushed it around the saran-ball. Let it dry, cutting out a small hole in the top for expansion & contraction. I ended up with some bumps in the bottom from the rack it was drying on (oops) and filled those in with paper clay (MM is not a very good filler.) Once it was somewhat dry I cut the holes with a razor knife, then sliced open the saran wrap and began carefully pulling out the plastic bags, then peeling the saran wrap off the insides. Ugh, this was hard. THEN... carve, sand, paint, poly, prime, paint, clearcoat, make the stem, done. Did I mention how long it took me to mix the stem paint for me to be satisfied? He's the perfect size and shape. SO much work, so much time, for such a simple simple thing, but gosh darnit he's perfect now. I love him!
Personal Thoughts:
I love Mon-sieur Bome's work. Visit his website--monsieurbome.com, it's amazing (and has some nice music too!) I've been working on Halloween-chan for about two years now, and it seems like she'll never be finished. I love Halloween, I love pumpkins, I love demon girls, she's my dream costume! So I have to work hard to make this happen!
