Styrofoam Construction!

Post by mindtailor » Mon Jul 26, 2004 5:39 pm

I'm obtaining a sheet of pink styrofoam from Home Depot and want to cut it into layers, which I will glue together and carve/sand into the proper shape.

I'm making her broomsticks, her hair, and the jewel out of this styrofoam and I want to know three things.

1. What sort of glue should I use to stick the layers together with;
2. What sort of tool should I use to cut the pieces out; and
3. How should I sand it down to the proper shape?

If it helps, I will not be doing the details on the fire side, it just needs to be the general shape, and in both cases I will be painting/affixing things to the outside.
no leap in logic is too extreme... for RAGE!

Easy!
1. "Stuff" expaniding foam or wood glue
2. a Serated knife for rough cut, and a razor for the fine details
3. Sand paper, go with the grain. or use a razor for very smooth details.

Might I recomend apllying some glitter around it with an aheasive?

For the sandpaper, use 120 grit sand paper..it's some of the finest, or 180..those are your best bets ^.^

Believe it or not, I've found that electric carving knives get you a smoother cut. Not enough to go buy a carver, but if you've got one, it'll save you time and hassle.

To be honest, I'm not sure how much they are new. I got mine at a yard sale for $5 though, so I don't think they're more then $25 - $30.

Just use a metal nail file. They're a buck, tops.
