Wig Question

Post by Kitty-Armada » Wed Feb 02, 2005 7:34 am

I know you can color wigs by using Sharpies but that takes too long.
Can you use hair dye?

Hair dye won't work because it won't soak into the plastic fibers of the wig. It may stain a white/blond wig, but it wouldn't look good if you're trying to get a saturated color. Fabric dye can work depending on the color you want. I think you have to use less water than the normal "recipe" that's on the dye package. I read somewhere that you can break open a Sharpie marker, take out the cylinder that holds all the ink, put the cylinder into a bottle of rubbing alcohol, and shake it gently to make a spray dye. Dunno how well that works because I've never talked to anyone who's actually done it, and I haven't had any occasion to use it myself yet. It sure sounds like it would beat coloring each strand with the actual marker, though.

You need a bit more than one sharpie, though.

Well, the thing with taking the sharpie apart though and using that to make the spray stuff is that it's really diluted and it really just doesn't work as well as you would hope. It's really runny and a lot of the color just doesn't come out correctly.

But fabric dye on a wig is even worse. It soaks into the costume and when you sweat, it gets everywhere on your skin and on your scalp. It's bad!

Technically, wig dye that stays in the wig and off the costume can only be purchased here at http://www.katiebair.com but sharpies work in the same way. It's just that they take a lot longer...
