I'm new to Cosplay, want to make Old Dragon slayer armor.

Yeah.... Probably not the first thing I should be jumping into. But nothing else interests me. I would prefer the Old Dragon Slayer's armor over anything. Due to the fact that I am new to "Heavy/Committed" cosplay, I look for help from experienced professionals. I would like to wear it for the Salt Lake City Comic Con.
My first concern is what material should I acquire? And what would be cheap but still worth it?
How I should go about crafting such "Complex" pieces of the suit?
Where do I start?
And other Newbly questions...
Any help is appreciated, and no matter how New I am to this, I SHALL FINISH THIS ARMOR SET!
