I need a good challenge!

I've been thinking ahead to next Acen and decided I want to get a head start. I have an intermediate knowledge of patterns and sewing machines, but haven't really had the time or opportunity to really put time into a costume and would like to see what I can do with the next 6-7 mos.
I'm female, 5'6, 125lb with med-long black straight hair. I'm on a budget, so I don't plan on spending a lot on specialty accessories. (hitai-ate, wigs, weapons, etc). I really want to be able to make the whole outfit myself, mostly cuz i saw so many ebay costumes at acen last year... DX
Any ideas would be helpful. Some that I've considered are Naruto's Konan (which is a possibility), FFX Lulu (but all those straps are rather daunting.. and uncomfortable) or a random Loli outfit (easy, fun, but rather overdone). I could probably make convincing shrine maiden, but I really want to do something I can be proud of next year! Any suggestions?
