Leather looking fabric suggestions?

The character I'm making has a mid-calf length, black, distressed leather cape. It doesn't go over the shoulder, but I'm afraid making that out of even pleather would be too heavy to walk around in. Any suggestions on what fabric I ought-to use? Something a bit more light-weight but looks worn leather? I'm open to painting ideas as well.
Also, the bottom of it is supposed to be cut into strips so I would prefer something that doesn't fray or tips on how the suggested fabric should be kept from fraying.
Thanks! I appreciate all suggestions!

Joann's and A.C. Moore have some nice leather-replica bolts- they aren't too pricy, and they're pretty lightweight. I've used it in cosplays before, and it works pretty well. The only downside is that is isn't a very shined leather, but if you're making a cape, I don't think you want that.
