Yea, consider how my stepdad feels whenever I give him a bulk order to do for Amphigory? At least you can get bulk order discounts at Witchwigs but I can never wait so long as to actually get that many....I wish I could but then deadlines are always a bummer and I wouldn't be able to finish some in time.

My computer broke down again and then the day before I was so tired I didn't really feel like answering any of the replies.

Anyway, I tend not to bulk order on witchwigs mostly because I don't use that site very often only when I'm looking for something specific. Take for example, both the white wigs on Amphigory and Witchwigs are the same color but the one on witchwigs is bone straight and Amphigory has a tiny little wave in it. Now when I need a completely straight wig and have very little time to do it, I'll order from witchwigs and not Amphigory.

But I do order Femme's a lot because I consider them "All Purpose". A lot of styles are really easy to do using a Femme Fatale wig as a base. Pig-tails are a good example of this too! If you use a too long of a wig, there won't be enough fiber to pull up and it will actually be too thin. Also, there will be too much to work with for a job that you're trying to do. That's why the shorter hair that a Femme allows you to work with doesn't let you feel overwhelmed!

But I order other than Femme Fatale wigs! Lol! All of my Inuyasha wigs are Enchantments and my Shadow Lady wig started out as a Cleo!

But you're welcome, I love answering questions about wigs because I know for a fact that I know all that I'm talking about! With costumes, I have to think and guess a bit more.

But thank you for the compliment, Kohyoh! You make me blush! But I never saved you from doing work....if you ever commission me, then I would have saved you from doing work. I'll I've done is make your work somewhat easier.

Well, get a better computer but unless you're on the move or in college, you really will never need a laptop. Now when you can't see the true colors of things, that's when a change is in order.

I've read through this whole thread and I've gotta agree with everyone else - Hemuloki-sama, you're great with wigs. hehe ^_^ I only have one question... I'm going to get the white "enchantment" wig from Amphigory for my Sephiroth costume, but I have to make the parts in the front that stick up. You mentioned using caulk, but you didn't say where to get it. The only caulk I know of I'd have to go to Home Depot to buy, is that the same stuff? I wouldn't think so but I may be wrong.

I'm at school right now in a very quiet room but reading this made me blush and chuckle! Everyone's staring!

Thank you for the very nice compliment anyway!

But yes, caulk is bought from Home Depot and you have to get the clear dry brand that will be non-toxic and also dry clear.

BUT...for Sephiroth's bangs, you'll only need hairspray to get the bangs up and to make them keep their shape and not really move about, you use a blowdryer in very small and controlled amounts. But the blowdryer you can only use is one that has a temperature control switch! Don't use ones that just have the on and off button because you will ruin the wig!
However, using the one that has the "High, Off, Low" settings is dangerous too. You can only use controlled amounts by carefully going across the bangs, pretty much with the tip touching the fiber. It'll change the shape of it, effectively hardening it, and create the perfect look. However, if you feel the wig is getting too hot, stop, and let it cool down until it reaches the original temperature. Then try again.

Never keep on going after you feel the wig getting a bit ..hmmm, what's the right word? Hmmmmm, Too hot. That's really it, just don't go on after you feel the wig is about to turn sticky hot.

As a sidenote too, wigs are funny like that and can be molded into the right designs using all kinds of crazy stuff! Besides, Home Depot is a great wig accessory shop! Haha!

I just decided to put this here because for people that don't know where to get caulk can just get it from Katie Bair. She also sells a bunch of other supplies that I find very useful.

Yes, I would love to see how that turns out as well. I'll post a pic of my next commission, a Selphie wig. It's immensely funny right now with pencils in it!

The curlers I own are all too small to create those massive three curls that she has so I'm gonna blowdry it while the hair is clipped to pencils!

Curious: does anyone have any advice for getting hair to grow quicker? I'd like to be able to wear my fighter costume at Acen this year, but at the rate it's growing, it won't be long enough to look right.

I hear that lots of protein based foods will make it grow faster but I'm not 100% sure since my hair grows an inch every other 2 weeks, which is phenomenal speed in my opinion.

Here, try this forum thread at Cosplay.com too. http://forums.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=33726

Depending on whether or not you're willing to cut it, you can do an assortment of things.

If you're not willing to cut it, you can get a wig from Amphigory and style it accordingly using hairspray and caulk if you need it. Hairspray should be enough though if you don't want the tufs of hair being too long. Keep in mind that this is the easier version.

If you're willing to cut and dye your hair, then cut it about neck length (If you've seen Hana Kimi, Ashiya's cut) and then using gel you should be able to get that style. Just spray some hairspray and you're good to go.

Honestly, I think you should get the ravished femme fatale from amphigory and trim it to about chin length before separating the pieces for Ed's radical hair. Once you have the pieces all separated, use hairspray and caulk to style the pieces into place. You may have to actually turn the wig to the side to get the piece to stick out just in the right place.

Hi all,
I'm working on my wig for Hikaru from Angelic Layer (here's a pic -http://angelic.hikaru.online.fr/data/ga ... aru/05.gif)
and I need to style the bangs a bit. The bangs as they are now are very messy and get in my eyes alot. Does anyone have any good tips on light styling such as getting big bangs to behave or stay in fat little points?

Needless to say, it's a synthetic wig. I know regular gels and all don't work on synthetics and I've looked at quite a few wig tutorials but they all deal with bigger things than styling bangs. What styling products, methods have worked for you?

Thanks!

Alright, with Hikaru, I would style the wig around the actual headgear for the finer points like the bangs since they are basically working around that. For the bangs though, I would cut it just like the picture does, like that wave flow. Damn, this is hard to explain...

Okay, first you seperate out the sides of the wig that you want to be cut down. I've marked it on this picture and please excuse the crappy paint graphics. This is done pretty quickly afterall.

http://onfinite.three10.com/libraries/42356/24d.jpg

Separate those out and push them out of your way. Now, take your scissors and cut the bangs to the length that you see in the picture.

http://onfinite.three10.com/libraries/42357/9a0.jpg

Mine is obviously flawed but see how they flow from short to long to short again? Well, cut your bangs to flow like that and once you get them to the length that you want, comb them out and take some hairspray. Spray it on the bangs and adjust each one to how you would like them to sit. Now, this should be said but hairspray makes wigs rock hard! So the bangs aren't going anywhere after you're done with it unless you spray it again and re-adjust.

Please make sure you style this on a foam head as their eyes are a really good marker for your own.

As for styling products, caulk and styling glue are what I really use for bigger things. Hairspray for Hikaru's wig should be enough though.

Edit: I recently deleted the Onfinite pictures from my storage file there so they won't show up anymore.

Hemuloki-sama, could it be, are you the Goddess of Wigs? I always knew there was one but I never knew she was no nice! :D

Thank you so much for the illustrated (!) instructions. I will try them out this weekend and let you know how it came out.

Keep up the good work, oh Goddess. Btw, what does your name mean?

Me?! The Goddess of Wigs?! OH *incredibly flush* OMG, I am so not the wig goddess! That title belongs to Katie Bair...but the compliment is so nice!

Well, I gave you illustrations because after explaining it, I decided that I would have liked some images. If I had a wig that was close to yours, I would have showed you actually using a wig...but my digital camera is dead from no batteries.

But my name is actually a combination for Ragnorak Loki and his evil rival Heimdell. Of course, there's some letter rearranging to Hemuloki and I chose -sama because it's much more respectable than Hemuloki-chan.

I also know for styling...something called Knox gelatin works very well. You can buy it in any grocery store in the baking section and its about $2 CAD for 4 packets. I used it for my Zell hair...and it works wonders. Doesn't smell or losen up in heat, and stays in tack without hairspray and even if people touch it constantly. It's really messy though. (Don't wash out with warm/hot water or it will cook!)

I have a question about bangs. When I bought my wig for my Ddita costume...it came without bangs. I was gonna cut the wig to make them...but I didn't want to ruin the wig...two days before the con. Any suggestions on how to cut bangs on a bangless wig without ruining anything?

Oh wow, i've read through this is entire thread and i have come to these conclusions:
im not the only one clueless about hair (thank the skies)
Hemuloki-sama is indeed a goddess (and nice too!!!)
and im sorry Hemuloki-sama, but i too would like to inquire
your services.
I would like to cosplay as Cho Hakkai from Saiyuki and have no idea what to do. Would ye, mighty goddess of hair, be able to help the clueless cosplayer that is me? :-) Thankyou!

Well, the real problem with this wig is the height of the bangs! O.o

I'm looking at it and I know that a Femme Fatale from Amphigory would be the way to go. Just straighten it out after you pick out your respective color.

See, the question is...how high do you want the bangs to be?

Ps. I am not a goddess

truthfully, im not quite sure. at least, i don't have it figured out in inches or anything. i don't need it so high that it'd be like sora from kh but... hmmmm... gomen nasai, im no hair expert. perhaps you would have some sort of idea?

Lol, thank you!

But with Hakkai, based on various images, it can be really tall or not so much. I would just go for something that's not very tall. But with Hakkai's style, it's like a wave from the tallest spike at the top, to the smallest where his bangs start.

If you cut out the bang that goes over your eye first, then really you're set to go for the rest. Take away the hair that you'd like for the big part and cutting it in the angle you want, cut and then seperate from the rest of the wig. Taking hairspray, you can get those spikes up.

If you have a dollar store, go there and buy that stuff. If you have any hairspray in your house like spritz or something, use that. The cheaper the hairspray is, the better it works on your wig. Just be sure not to coat it on.

If you need anymore help, please contact me. My AIM, PM, and everything is there for your usage.

Wig help (Spiked up wig)

Post by LugiaIce » Thu Mar 03, 2005 10:58 pm

I am doing a wig for anime convention and I am going as a character from BeyBlade. I am going as Ray. The problem is I don't know what products to use to make the spikes permantely stay up and not let them fall down while I have the wig on. I just got some spray adhesive for it. (Its like a craft spray glue). Is this glue safe to use for the spikes. I tried using hair spray and the spike kind of stayed up, but the spikes keep falling down. Please tell me what product to use for it. :? :?:

I like clear caulk, but a friend of mine said that there is this stuff called "Stiff Stuff" that you can use on a wig that will stay but you can wash it out. I'm going to have to look into that.
It's not love that makes the world go 'round; it's fanboys and fangirls.

Clear drying caulk like Kwik-Seal is really nice but unfortunately, it is permanent so if you want to use the wig again for anything else, you'll have to just be patient with using hair spray.

But check on that Stiff Stuff, Tia and see if it just works with real hair.

There's also a lil tutorial on my LJ for spiking with caulk...keep in mind that my way is pretty radical. I know that people like Katie Bair don't use caulk the same way I do.

I suspect it might be some kind of glue for regular hair that she adapted to use on wigs, too. I'm going to ask her at Jacon in April. I had a good reason, but now I can't remember it. 0.o; Hopefully I'll remember before then.

Help me!!!

Post by Juri Arisugawa » Mon Mar 21, 2005 5:24 pm

Ok.

I'm making Carmilla of Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust and I can't figure out the weird hair. I know it has to be a wig so, I'm going to ask the wig experts. The hair sort of looks like a double sided cone with hair draping in the back and in the front. Hmmmmm. I also don't know which color I'm going to use. Should I go for more natural, or the bright red she has?

Ok, I'm totally new to wigs, so sorry if I sound dumb. ^^' ( though I did read the whole thread and didn't really find anything that helped so I figured it'd be ok to post ). I too have been looking at the wigs at Amphigory.com for sometime, and only up until now was I a bit unsure of their quality. But as it seems that's all anybody seems to like to recommend, why go against it and make life hard? ^^ However, it's just the trouble of choosing WHICH one. I'm looking to make a Yuki (from Fruits Basket, sorry I don't have a picture ) wig, and while it was recommended I purhcase the Femme Fatale wig, I'm a bit nervous when it comes to the whole bangs deal. The Femme Fatale does not have bangs and I don't know if it's possible to style bangs into a ....'non-banged' wig. Just...looking for a little input is all. ^^'

Also, a second question ( sorry for being such a bug ) when I came to reading about all the hair products that are recommended for styling the wig, after you have used them, does that result in the wig turning hard? I mean, is it no longer pretty, it is obvious that it has something icky in it holding it in place? That sort of makes me nervous ( as well as sad that you won't even be able to tell how pretty the wig was to begin with )So yeah, if anyone could help me with those two things, I'd love you forever. ^^

Depending on the look you want for your bangs, you can actually choose one of two wigs. One will make life easier while the other will test your cutting and straightening skills.

The short bob already has bangs in it.
http://www.amphigory.com/wigs_z.html
So it would just be a matter of shaping it until you get the exact angle and style of Yuki's. I know a lot of people that also used this wig for its unique parting and just because it looked really nice as a Rei Ayanami wig. But from the picture on Amphigory, it really doesn't help your cause since Yuki has longer hair than Rei. So here:

The wig makes a manga Yuki though.

Anyway, if you want to test out your skills on a femme, here's what you need to do.

This is a link to my Lj where I have three tutorials posted. The middle one (below the teal wig) is a tutorial on how to cut bangs into your wig.
But yes, it's entirely possible to style bangs into a wig.

Now, for your second question, it's a matter on what you use. Caulk turns the wig hard and it won't wash out. Be sure that when you use caulk, the wig isn't meant for anything other than that character in the future. >.> Cause yea, it's stuck that way.
Hairspray will make it hard but it still bounces around and can be junked around with. But only the caulk above will make it look nasty if you use too much on one specific area. Hairspray though? Have fun.[/list]

Thank you Hemuloki-sama, I love you! lol, your advice was very helpful as was the site on theat little tutorial. However, I was a bit curious, wig a wig as plain as Yuki's the use of caulk probably won't even be needed, am I right as his hairstyle isn't extreme or anything. But yeah, anyway, thanks so much for the tips on the bangs! They helped a bunch. :)

Well since this is on wigs and stuff. Got a question.

How can I make a wig have volume? I try to make a wig of Final Fantasy Advent Children Reno for my sister, but it all came out flat and eekie since the wig had very short bangs where there shouldn't be short bangs. Reno has long bangs. Plus the wig has every little hair to work with. It's a cheap kind of wig that you get at party city.

Many fan based sites have pics of him, but the way they do his hair looks a lot like Kenshin. Nothing like the pic above.

Nazomi, if you do everything correctly (also depending on which wig you start with) all you'll need is a hair dryer.

Caulk is moreso used with styles like Cloud.

Juci, with hair like Reno, I wouldn't have even started with something long. I would have started with someone mildly short and then gone on with extensions. A halloween store wig will not make Reno's hair look good at all.

:( I'm not asking if my wig is not qualify for me to work on. I'm asking if anyone can give me steps on how to do volume and glue extensions for my really bad wig experiment.

Well this wig is mildy short now.

It just needs volume and some extensions thats all. There was a wig panel I gone to last years Kunicon and the lady told me I could do volume and some extensions. I'm just asking if anyone can give me a step by step on how to do volume and extensions on any wig thats all. 8) If there is a way for good wigs then there is a way for bad ones. One just needs to be creative with it thats all, but I still need the basics of doing volume and how to glue extensions onto a wig in order to be creative with this really bad wig. I might be able to make it pull off. :D

*sighs*

http://www.katiebair.com Has a step by step tutorial on how to make extensions while my Lj has a step by step tutorial in it that explains how to sew them in.

Is that better?
