Prop Help! Blazblue Murokumo sword

Post by Iris » Mon Aug 30, 2010 9:06 pm

I'm looking to build this prop in about 3 weeks and 3 days (should be enough time I hope) I love making armor and such but this prop as me thinking a bit.

it's from the game blazblue what we had for it was a way to make it light to carry around a con but also make it so it can stand on it's own. Which we're guess it's going to need a stand to be able to do that so I'm free to pose with it. Either that or I can have my boyfriend stand behind it and hold it up. XD

Anyways what we figured was making it out of insulation foam board (I have one that is bigger than me and about two inches thick down in my basement that's never been used. Figureing I could use that for the basic cut out it (not including the circle the spikes are one, spikes, hilt, and sculpture that's on it. I'm not sure if the two inch foam board would be thick enough on it's own with out buying another one and sculpting the details on each of the foam boards and then attaching them together somehow.

Also the sculpture on the sword is on both side but we're looking for a easy way to make that. We do believe Clay would break to easily to break if it fell. We're looking into the hilt into just being a piping.

Just looking for other suggestion and to tell me what will work and what won't work.

Sounds like you've got it under control. I think you will need another board, at least. Now all it takes is some thought, some drawing, and some hours! Looking forward to the result! Luck!

For something this massive I typically seal the foam with plasti-dip or bondo (I haven't worked out a preference just yet) then I apply fiberglass cloth and resin. This gives the prop UNBELIEVABLE strength since this is what surfboards and boats are made of. Now it looks all nasty since it's covered in cloth and resin, so application and sanding of bondo is necessary to give it a smooth finish. I recommend getting a power sander (belt preferably) to expedite the bondo sanding process otherwise you'll get a cruddy finish, kind of like my earlier props >_< but now that I have a belt sander, things are turning out A-ok!

Good luck to you!
