You can use regular foam, that's just fine, but be prepared for a little growling just because sculpey -for some reason- just doesn't like to stick to it as naturally as it does to wood or some other things. Try cardboard if you can get it to get the shape you want but if you make the shape with seperate pieces, it'll be fine.
But if you are good with sculpey and get the width you want, you'd be surprised by how little sculpey you use. I had a lot left over and my bangles and armbands were thick when I finished.
