Help choosing the right wig?

Post by thethornylily74 » Sat Jan 13, 2007 11:37 am

Hello. I'm not a cosplayer, but a friend of mine (I'm not at liberty to divulge their name or gender) is. They are too shy to ask for help themselves (at least for this particular costume) so I'm asking around for them.

My friend plans to cosplay Ron Weasley from "Harry Potter", and wants the wig to resemble Ron's/Rupert Grint's hair as seen in the fourth movie. They have their heart set on a wig in "fire red" (a color we both understand to be exclusive to the "New Look" line of wigs, sold at both Cosworx.com and Amphigory.com)- they're just not sure which style they should get. It should also be noted that they fear cutting bangs and layers, but don't mind cutting a long wig shorter in the back. They don't mind seeing if a local salon will cut bangs or do any other "simple" styling work if a suitable wig that already has the necessary bangs and/or layers doesn't exist, though minimal necessary styling is preferred either way. The wig is all they need help on- they already have the robe and stuff. All that said, here are some reference pics taken from both the film and the game based on it:

So, any suggestions? I don't style wigs myself, asking for public opinion on my friend's behalf before they make an expensive mistake is all I can do for them.

Thanks, but that wasn't quite what I was asking. My friend knows of a ton of different wig sites (including the one you mentioned), but doesn't know what specific wig to get.

Thats really upto personal choise, there are so many wigs that would work. all your friend has to do is look though the tones and tones of wigs find one that she or he thinks is the perfect shape and just check if it comes in the right colour. Some people would go with a darker red hair some with alot more orange, it also goes with thats persons skin colour.

You'll probably want to look for a "shag" or "long shag" style. It'd be the closest to what you need. Might have to comb the front differently, but no other major styling.

Something like the wig called "Hannah" on this page might work:

Good luck. ^_^

*grins sheepishly* Er, if anyone's seen my Cosplay.com page recently, then you've seen my placeholder for this costume and therefore figured out that I'm the aforementioned friend who was too shy to ask for help herself.

Anyway, my friend here also asked around in other forums, too, and from what suggestions she passed on to me, I ultimately bought this wig in Fire Red:

Someone at the Hair Cuttery by my apartment was able to cut the bangs in for me (and for cheap), so now I have the complete costume but haven't worn it anywhere yet.

Sorry to intrude but I was wondering if you could style a wig. More than likely not, but its worth asking. I'm trying to do Sumomo from Chobits.

Neither I nor my friend who started this thread style wigs. My friend knows nothing about wigs (I really should've just asked around myself to begin with rather than have her do it) and I always have to have someone else style mine if not find an existing wig that's already the right style as-is.

You might wanna try one of these sites, though I've never actually ordered from any of them so I can't say how good or bad they are:

http://www.orangeoctopuswigs.com/
http://lizzy.agentsofcosplay.com/

There's also this guy "trigonsson" on Cosplay.com. He doesn't have a website but here's a link to his Cosplay.com profile:

Again, I personally cannot vouch for any of those people as I myself have never ordered from them, but they're worth a look.
