Personally, I don't like patterns. Weirdly enough, I think they make sewing more complicated.

As far as the no money problem goes, often old sheets and spiffy things picked up from a thrift store are really good for cheaper fabric solutios. Also, remnant stores and some thrift stores have lace and frills left over from other peopl's projects that are quite affordable. The poofy frilly unders...

Try getting similar patterns, and altering them and putting them together to get what you're lookin for. I have found this useful in the past

I learned everything I know by pretty much diving headfirst into things and going "Oh, look what I just did", and pestering other people for tips on what they did with their costumes, and working things around in my head (I hate patterns).

Wow this conversation is amusing :D And about hair growth... I cut my hair in.... I think early august to about two inches all over (instead of 1-1 1/2 in the back, 5-6 in front), and it's october now and it's only grown about an inch at most :cry: I'm growing it out for my Onime No Kyo cosplay.... ...

I don't know if this will help you any, but sometimes it helps to buy a pattern with a design similar to what you want and alter it.
I might be able to help more if you could specify what anime you're doing.

How would I make Sesshomaru's (Inu Yasha) spiky armor that goes over his shoulder? I don't want to use metal because a) it's heavy and 2)my only friend who welds won't do it for me :cry: . I've got a vague idea on how to make his fluffy, and that leaves his armor... Sorry I don't have a picture that...

...The real question is, how would you make that fold-type thing in the front? Not only that, the slits in the shoulders suggest that it's an outer jacket (I can't for the life of me remember what it's called), so then would his off-white kimono under that be his under- or outer-kimono???
