I had this exact same problem with a 1967 Singer (older than me!). I even took it to a repair shop but they couldn't fix it. My experience is that there's just no fixing it once this problem starts so you have to either learn lots and lots of new swear words and handsewing stitches or buy a new one....

Hi Sailor Saturn, This is just a guess but how about getting a red ribbon (matte if you can, not shiny), making small slits at the appropriate intervals, and threading the ribbon through.
