About this Costume
Construction Details:
I made this Comic-Con 2004. I cheaped out and didn't get silk velvet, but regular cotton velvet. It's a dark midnight blue. I got a faux silk for the red - belt, trim, etc. Navy blue poly chiffon for the veil. Paper mache, gold spray paint, and puffy paint for the crown. The buttons are the real ones from Hushco. Whoo! The trim I created myself from various stuff I bought at Jo-Anns. Gold leaf sequins, a double twisted gold rope that I twisted apart and used for the bullion, a gold trim with loops on both side (I cut the loops off one of the sides), tan bias tape, seed beads, this weird gold tapey stuff that I cut up for my gold mallorn leaves, gold music note appliques that I cut up and pretended were embroidery, gold loops for jewelry making, gray chenille, and even a bit of puffy paint. I studied the trim and tried to replicate it, but in the end it was too hard to see the details and I ended up doing mostly my own thing. For patterns, I used parts of McCalls 4490 (bodice), Simplicity 5041 (sleeves), and another Simplicity I seem to have lost (skirt). I ran out of fabric and wasn't able to make the skirt as full as I wanted. Most of the problems I had were sizing issues. I have to alter just about everything because I'm so short. I had a hard time making the bodice fit, and I eventually gave in and put darts down the back. I think that's it. I love this costume. With all it's problems, I love it. I'd like to thank Conan O'Brian for his loving support. He's the only friend I had on those late nights trying to finish before Comic Con. The trim on this was my first real taste of detail-detail work, even though a lot of it is glue, lol. It was fun in a lot of ways, but exhausting!
