About this Costume
- Construction Details:
I kinda figured the top was going to be the hardest part, so I decided to get that out of the way first. The base patterns come from my Cosmode pattern book modified to suit my needs, and I used a stretch sateen with apparel lining. While I love the look of the ruffles (all handmade, because I'm an idiot and forgot I can ruffle on my machine), it caused sooo many problems when I was putting all the pattern pieces together. I love how it turned out in the end, but I don't want to sew anything with ruffles for a long time! @___@ I used this tutorial for the front closure, the ends didn't turn out as square as I would have liked because of the damn ruffles, but at least I put a new bias tape technique to use! The fabric still hasn't 'softened' up from being washed, so I'm hoping that ironing and steaming it will get rid of those pesky wrinkles!
I worked on the skirt next, trying to figure out how to pattern the layers and do the whole no waistband thing was interesting. ^^; I swear I must have spent a few hours just STARING at my references, thinking that maybe if I stared hard enough I'd magically understand what I needed to do. I think it kinda worked. LOL Anyway, once I actually started on a mock up, the only hard part was figuring out how to pattern the curve hem for the circle skirts, then I cut up my pattern pieces for the real thing. The red layers are half circle skirts (the plaid is from LA's Fashion District), while the black ruffle layers are full circle skirts for maximum ruffle effect. I decided not to add the curve hem on the back of the black ruffle layers, because uh, I need some butt coverage. The skirt accurately rides my butt as it is, so isn't that good enough??
The accessories are pretty much all giant bows or ruffles, it was nice to take a break from gathering ruffles to make bows instead. I guess. For the ribbon on the choker and garter belts, I carefully Heat'n Bonded that stuff on, using 3/8" ribbon and the garter belts have 5/8" ribbon for the tails. I know the gloves aren't accurate at all as they're more of a dark red and don't have the cuff, but I think it still works and it actually matches the reds nicely! Plus, they're actually really nice quality, super soft leather AND ABOVE ALL I ONLY PAID $3.75 AND I DIDN'T HAVE TO SEW ANY MOTHERFUCKIN' GUSSETTED GLOVES. SO THERE. *ahem* The suspenders are strips serged together in the middle to get that stupid seam line, and I used interfacing to get the crisp corners for the front. Now I just need to figure out what to do for the gold earrings, buttons, and chain. xD;;
- Personal Thoughts:
- Nico Nico Nii~!! rnrnThis is honestly one of the most frustrating costumes I've ever made, I mean it doesn't look too difficult to do upon first glance, right? WRONG. So, of course this is the first outfit I wanted to make from the series!! 8D I dunno, it's something about the red plaid, sailor collar, thigh highs, or uh... the fact that it's Nico. I had to do it. GOTTA GET OTP PICS WITH ALL THE MAKIS ESPECIALLY MARYSSA (Ɔ ˘⌣˘)♥(˘⌣˘ C)
