About this Costume
- Construction Details:
-
This costume was entirely sewn from fabric I already had on hand, which felt very true to the character.
The skirt is from my old Briar Rose costume. It's a medium weight knit. I shortened it, brought in the waistline and added the white lining / underskirt and distressed the hem a little. After seeing the movie on the big screen, I realize I can do a lot more distressing.
The undershirt was made from an old sheet that I tea-dyed for a dingy look. The collar piece was really tricky, I want to tweak it a bit.
The bodice was made of scraps from my husband's Bang Shishigami costume, it's a great stretchy olive. It's lined with white knit from a fabric swap (which I also used to pattern it). The "lacing" is made from leather strips I had on hand. It's all for show, this piece just goes on over my head.
I tried to style a wig, but I couldn't quite get it to work without looking really cartoony (and not in a good way). I ended up using my own hair, which sadly does this without too much encouragement. - Personal Thoughts:
- I've been in love with this movie and book for a very long time. Molly's a character that I've related with more and more as I grow older, and the timing was right for me to make this costume. I'm so happy I was able to wear it with friends to a screening of the movie with Peter S. Beagle. He told us that seeing us in the audience made him happy, and I almost cried right on the spot. Damn you!
