About this Costume
Construction Details:
This costume was REALLY TOUGH TO MAKE. I had so much stress prior to even starting it about making the dress, and I was right to worry because it was really hard to figure out. I drafted all the patterns myself, using a costume dress patter for reference for the top.

I couldn't actually find any suitable gold fabric for the trim, so I hand painted a LOT of bias tape, and then stitched it twice to have perfect stitching on the top layer. This was my first time making mitered corners, and it took me about 4 and a half hours just to put the bias tape trim on the skirt to get them figured out right. o___o

To get that "anime lace" look I actually appliqued white cotton together for that clean look on the bottom of the white skirt and sleeves. The gold "dots" on the skirt were put on with a stamp I made out of foam to give it a cool textured look, with the same paint I used for my gold trim.

For AWA 2015, I decided to update the costume by finally making the armor. This was my first time making armor, so it was pretty intimidating, but overall I'm pretty happy with how it all turned out.

I used foamie/craft foam for all the armor pieces, spray painted silver and painted on all the blue details by hand. The armor skirt panel is made using a microsuede, which I felt looked very appropriate because Saber's definite looks to have a texture to it in the visual novel art. The gold trim for the skirt was leftover from the main dress, and I appliqued on the small details to match.

Excalibur was made by my husband as a gift in exchange for me styling and hand tying his Iskander wig. It's all wood. I made the blade decoration plate with foamie, and painted it (the blade being done with the same spray paint I used for the armor, and the blue and gold were acrylics).
Personal Thoughts:
This costume has been a labor of love for 3 years now. The blue dress was an interesting challenge, and then I later upgraded it by making the armor and some changes to my wig. My husband made Excalibur for me, and I did the painting on it~ I ran out of time to make the armored boots for AWA 2015, so those will be done eventually and I think I can finally say I'm done making this costume lol.

Styling Notes
I LOVE this wig. Arda is such an awesome company, and they offered extensions, as well as a premade braided bun in the same color (which I used for my original, and later redid since Saber's bun is so enormous)! The "ahoge" has a wire base, and is atually detachable to make travel and storage much easier.

For the "ear tails", I used layered extensions, and sewed them on for a nice thick look that would fall flush with my face. I was inspired by my Saber nendoroid figure, which had an extra layer above the ear tails and gave it a really cool "anime" look.

I redid the bun later to make one more accurate. I made the base with foamie, heat formed over a bowl, with posterboard ribs on the inside to give it support. I painted that light yellow, and then went to town gluing the hair in layers on the bun. I used a pack of extra long hair extensions from Arda Wigs for the braid, and tucked and glued it underneath to make it look as seamless as possible. To secure it in place, I glued strips of foamie with clips on them, and used bobby pins to help keep it down while wearing it.
