Cosplayer Sylphy > Costume of Van Fanel from Vision of Escaflowne
About this Costume
- Construction Details:
I made everything except the pants and the wings. Between school, work, volunteering, and making two sailor fuku, I knew that I would not have time to make a large pair of angel wings, so I decided to order a base pair from Mother Plucker Feather Co. (snicker) and modify them.
Since I had to fit them into my car along with all my other costumes and props, not to mention maneuver my way around the con, I think that the wings turned out just the right size. However, I do hope to wear the costume again with a pair of my own wings which are larger in scale.
The shirt is made of a really nice, fairly lightweight cotton twill and is lined for structure. I had to sew what is basically a long horizontal buttonhole in the back of the shirt for the straps of the wings to slide through. The boot covers were made from my own pattern and are a lovely micro-suede, as are the gloves.
The part I'm least satisfied with is the wig. I bought two wigs, and neither fits my mental picture of what Van's hair would look like in real life. I'll need to fix that before I wear it again.
- Personal Thoughts:
- The Vision of Escaflowne is my favorite anime.
Ever since I first watched it back in the day, I’ve loved everything about it- its beautiful animation and musical score, its talented voice cast, and, most importantly, its masterful storytelling through character development.
The series was actually my impetus for attending anime cons and cosplaying. In 2005, I fangirled away at AX's Maaya Sakamoto concert, and, in 2007, the first costume I sewed on my own was a cosplay of Van. Given its amateurish quality, I hoped that I’d be able to remake it someday and be a part of a large Escaflowne cosplay group.
Six years later, I was fortunate to meet a wonderful bunch of Escafans, and that was that! We made our own costumes, offering advice and support along the way, and joined up at Fanime 2013. It was a great experience. ^__^
