Cosplayer cifera > Costume of Kyoko Kirigiri from Dangan Ronpa
About this Costume
- Construction Details:
I decided to just go ahead and make everything in an experiment to see if I could match up all the little details in her outfit. I actually had a lot of fun constructing this costume, even if I never want to make a blazer out of pleather ever again- it's one of the most complicated fabrics to fit and topstitch! I decided on pleather for the blazer because after examining jackets with a similar zippered-wrist style, I realized they were all made out of leathery materials. I also thought it might look nice with the gloves and boots being of a similar texture.
After examining many different references, and based on my own impression of her, I decided not to opt for a saturated lavender wig for my Kirigiri cosplay. Her hair never seems to be one specific color- official references are wildly inconsistent, showing it being anywhere from white to silver to grey to lavender. One thing is always consistent, though- there always seems to be a lighter (almost silvery) color on top, even if it's lavender below. Kirigiri's character design notes also state that she's meant to have a very desaturated, almost monochromatic palette.
So I picked a wig with a color reminiscent of the in-game sprite (a warm off-white) to start with, then I purchased a wig of similar length in a pale lavender. I wefted in the latter wig to achieve the look of deeper lowlights. I am really happy with the result- it gives just the look I was aiming for, and thanks to being two wigs in one it's super thick. The side braid was made with leftover cut off fiber from my trimming of the base wig.
- Personal Thoughts:
- I love Dangan Ronpa to an almost alarming degree. As someone who has been deep into Ace Attorney and Battle Royale fandoms in the past and who has a general love for angsty series, I was pretty much doomed to love Dangan Ronpa no matter what. I didn't have any real desire to cosplay Kirigiri until I finished it- lots of people had been telling me to attempt Junko. But I love Kirigiri so much more than Junko, so I settled on her.
