Cosplayer Shikarius > Costume of Kenshin Himura from Rurouni Kenshin
About this Costume
- Construction Details:
The two tops are made traditionally with rectangular panels, open sleeves, and handstitched collars. The hakama are... not! It's my preferred method for making "anime hakama": rather than cut the fabric in a large rectangle, I cut it in a large half circle and assemble it like a giant circle skirt. The ties are all accurate, though. It makes it so the top is fitted and the bottom flares out as opposed to the entire thing sitting squarely. Not accurate, of course, but I like the silhouette.
It wasn't particularly difficult, but that many straight lines/hems is a huge pain in the ass XD
The scar was simple scar wax blended into my cheek though next time I'll try something else... My scar looked super grim oAo;;;
I used my favorite gold contacts to emulate Kenshin's "Battousai mode" (you know what I mean) but... They ended up matching the wig in most pictures :D;;; How even...?
- Personal Thoughts:
- I. Finally. Did it.
I cosplayed Kenshin. I did. AHHHHHHHHH *A*
I've been planning this since I was 12, guys. TEN YEARS. And it was so beautiful. I got to wear this to the NYC Sakura Matsuri and everything was gorgeous (besides the fact that I had to hide my sword XD). Definitely a new favorite.
- Styling Notes
- I originally had it in a workable high ponytail, but it was super heavy and the event was all day so I decided to go with the low version instead. The bangs were razored to fluff out a bit.
- Wig Review
- First of all, I've gotta say that the color is spot on for manga Kenshin. The blend is gorgeous.
That being said, I'm so sorry to say this, but this wig is kind of awful. The fiber tangles and kinks like NOTHING ELSE. It's a shame because it's a beautiful color and it's so thick, but the fiber just breaks my heart. I own a few arda wigs (even another Luthien in teal) and none of the others are like this :( A 2 rating might be a little harsh, but for a $40+ wig I was expecting better...
