About this Costume
- Construction Details:
I constructed the frame out of 12gauge aluminum hard (as opposed to soft) wire. I wish I had used a 10 gauge but I didn't account for the weight of the craft foam. If it was just a 12 gauge with fabric, it would have held up very nicely. I had to reinforce the upper wings a bit more with some leftover 12 gauge wire. The upper wings took 20 ft of 12 gauge wire. The bottom wings I only used about 10 feet of 14 gauge aluminum wire since it was only the bottom part and didn't need to do a whole lot of supporting.
I bought some sheer black tricot fabric; sewed it and placed it over each piece of the wing. For the detailing, for each piece, there were 2 carefully traced and cut pieces of craft foam that I used to detail the veins and for the pink areas.
The foam was sealed and prepped prior to spray painting, and I did about 3-4 layers of paint for each piece and finished it off with satin finish. The brand of spray paint I used was Krylon.
The back support was essentially a large "ring" that I had wrapped with fabric to protect the skin from the wires that had been wrapped around. I used some stretchy material to act as "hoops" for the clear (bra) straps to hook onto as the straps to put on. The back support slipped into the back of one of my straps that was holding the front of the outfit; it is a backless outfit, so there were clear straps to hold it up.
- Personal Thoughts:
- I love this character and I wish I had more time to actually custom make my own dress but I had it commissioned instead. However, I constructed the wings entirely on my own and that was the most accomplished prop for this outfit, and the most important piece :) I am very happy and proud of these wings.
